These next six chapters address topics that come up as you try to get your child professional help. Once you have decided to consult a specialist (for evaluation or treatment) you have new information to deal with and new decisions to make. These chapters offer practical information, but also contain the names of various treatments, professionals, medications, etc. that may be new to you. With so much new to deal with as you seek proper mental health treatment for your child, you may feel like you are lost in a confusing and frustrating maze. I hope the following information will help you navigate that maze and see it more positively as a path towards helping your child get back on track.
Before the first chapter on professional help, I present a brief overview of how the child mental health system has evolved over recent years. This will help you better understand how today's system works. I focus particularly on child psychiatric practice, including my opinion about the current emphasis on the biological/ pharmacological perspective for making sense of and treating children's difficulties...
